Pursuant to Regulation 102 of the Electricity Regulations 1997 ("the Regulations"), I, Sanjai Deepak Raj, Group Manager, Energy Safety Service, give the following notice.
N o t i c e
1. Title and commencement-(1) This notice is the Electricity Regulations (Prohibited Electrical Appliance - Multi Reverse Plug Adapter) Notice 2007.
(2) This prohibition is to take effect on and from the date following the date of publication of this notice in the
New Zealand Gazette.
2. Prohibited equipment-The manufacture, importation, sale, installation and use of the electrical appliance, being
a "Multi Reverse Plug Adapter" as prescribed in this notice, is prohibited.
3. Description-
(a) The outlet device to which this notice applies is
a product known as "Travel adaptor" and/or "Multi Reverse Plug Adapter" available from "The Warehouse" prior to 15 March 2007, although it may have been available elsewhere.
(b) The packaging wording is "Multi Reverse Plug Adapter". The appliance is known to exist in overall
grey and white colour. The product may exist with other colours and packaging.
(c) The product has a three insulated pin plug portion
with the following wording moulded into the plastic; "MAX.220V~MAX.10A MAX.2000W".
(d) The product has a socket outlet portion, able to accept plugs from multiple countries, and has the following wording printed on the white plastic front face; "POWER ON SAFETY SHUTTER".
(e) An orange light will illuminate on the front face if plugged into an energised socket outlet.
4. Details of hazard-The outlet device constitutes, or may constitute an electrical hazard, in that:
(a) The user may receive an electric shock when an earth pin of a plug is inserted into the live active receptacle of the adapter.
(b) The adaptor has an insufficient voltage rating for use in New Zealand and may present a hazard during normal use.
5. Reasons for prohibition-The outlet device described in this notice is a non-compliant electrical appliance under Regulation 76A of the Regulations in that:
It is so constructed that:
(1)(b) It has inadequate protection against direct contact or indirect contact; and
(2)(c) It is not safe under both normal and abnormal conditions of use.
